ICH Courier is the quarterly magazine on ICH in the Asia-Pacific region issued by ICHCAP since 2009. Every issue has its own theme under the title of the Windows to ICH, and the theme of the Vol 26 is 'HEALING RITUALS AND INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE.'

This survey report was conducted as part of the effort to identify the status of ICH festivals across the Silk Road region and further identify the challenges that should be resolved with regard to each festive event. This report presents the findings of the survey concerning ICH festivals, which was carried out in 2020 on the governments and cultural institutions across Silk Road countries, including the Republic of Korea. The valid sample, consisting of 347 respondents from nine countries, were statistically analyzed and described herein.

The Korea-Mongolia Joint Project ‘Establishing a Safeguarding System for the ICH in Mongolia’ was officially launched in 2008 subsequent to a series of consultative meetings between concerned officials from both parties, held in both countries.\n\nAs a third-phase of the Project, the previously prepared texts were deeply elaborated in addition to ICH related photos were provided and reference book layout, designing and publications were implemented. As a result, a 272-page book titled ‘The Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Mongol Nation’ was published and a relevant book opening ceremony and project evaluation seminar were held on 08 and 09 December2010 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

This meeting shares current situation and experiences related to ICH information in each country, such as subjects handling ICH information, relevant policies or institutions, infrastructure, scope and volume of information held. In addition, plans or necessary actions to create appropriate information base are presented by each country.

The word “jewelry” brings to mind something shiny or glamourous that makes people more beautiful. Jewelry can take the form of a pretty-looking hairband in a high-street shop, rings that a couple exchange as a symbol of their promise to each other, or an item that helps people stand out in smart clothes. \n\nBeyond aesthetic functions, jewelry can also have shamanistic meanings, such as the seashell masks of ancient times. This section introduces various meanings through ornaments from the Republic of Korea, Kazakhstan, India, and Fiji.

The implementation of the Mongolia?ICHCAP Joint Project of “ICH Documentation Workshop and Pilot Filming” in Mongolia has been carried out from May to August, in 2013, with collaborative efforts of UNESCO Accredited NGO in Mongolia ? Foundation for the Protection of Natural and Cultural Heritage (FPNCH) and International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region (ICHCAP).\n\nThis Joint Project has been initiated with regards to the i) lack of capacity in Mongolia in the professional experiences and expertise of ICH audio-visual documentation and production of films and documentaries utilizing the latest technologies and methodologies, and involvement of documentation experts and ICH experts to work together, and ii) based on the results of and the continuation of the joint efforts to safeguard the intangible cultural heritage, efforts which took place between 2009 and 2012, with aims to improve the legal system to safeguard ICH, to safeguard, restore and digitalize the ICH using modern technologies.\n\nThe ICH Documentation Workshop and Pilot filming exercises aimed at:\n\n- to conduct a Workshop with regards to share experiences and information on ICH Safeguarding through ICH documentation and dissemination in Mongolia and Korea;\n- to improve capacity of Mongolia, its personnel by applying the professional methodologies and techniques discussed through the Workshop meeting and Pilot filming;\n- to practice the Mongolian and Korean collaborative Pilot filming exercises; and\n- to gain expertise and strengthen capacity building at a practical level for ICH documentation in Mongolia, and to identify future challenges and collaboration.

Contemporary society has experienced a loss of intimacy among people and has seen the environment of transmission changed beyond recognition. However, intangible cultural heritage reveals its presence, quietly saying, “I am still here next to you.” Let’s visit Kyrgyzstan, Bhutan, Laos, and Samoa to see what kind of voice they give us.

As part of the Cultural Partnership Initiative of 2019, ICHCAP invited ICH professionals from Vietnam, Timor-Leste, Kazakhstan, Nepal and Indonesia. This publication is a collection of the research reports of 2019 CPI participants. The participants selected their own topic and conducted researches based on their various activities during their five-month stay in Korea.

In a changing era, protecting and recording ICH from natural and human influences has become a significant task. Digital recording of ICH has made it possible to preserve records for a long time, and access to records for the general population has also been greatly improved by making such records and information available online. In this issue, we’ll look at ICH in the Asia-Pacific region that utilizes science and technology to help ensure its continued viability.

The creative industries can assist in the economic development of a country while expanding opportunities to enjoy culture and arts for everyone. ICH helps these creative industries to grow, because it adds novelty and imagination. Let us take a look at various examples of how ICH and creative industries work in tandem in the Asia-Pacific region.
