Rope Walking in Uzbekistan
Uzbek rope walking art is very ancient and has its own traditions. Uzbekistan is considered the only country where this art has been preserved in its current form. This video gives us a look at the lifestyle of the rope walkers as they travel from early spring to late autumn with their families and teams while demonstrating their art. Currently more than forty ropewalkers’ groups perform in Uzbekistan. They are exempt from income tax.\n\nPerformances by the Madamin Dorboz team from the Paxtaobod district, Andijan, and by the Mukhiddin Ismailov team from the Bukhara region as well as interviews from members of the Vodil Dorboz team of Fergana region are in the present film.

Water Puppetry of Hong Phong(KOR)
The traditional village troupe performs the puppet shows in countryside at the traditional village festival and for tourists. The puppeteers manipulate the puppets by hand with string. The puppet shows with music and story tell about the farmer’s life and countryside activities. The film demonstrates the connection between the puppetry and the worship of the communal god that the show is an important performance at the traditional village festival.

Aitysh/Aitys, art of improvisation
Aitys is a contest centred on improvised oral poetry spoken or sung to the accompaniment of traditional musical instruments – the Kazakh dombra. Two performers (akyns) compete with one other to improvise verses on topical themes in a battle of wits that alternates between humorous ripostes and penetrating philosophical reflections. During the competition, the performers sit opposite one another improvising a dialogue on topics chosen by the audience. The winner is the performer considered to have demonstrated the best musical skills, rhythm, originality, resourcefulness, wisdom and wit. The most meaningful and witty expressions often become popular sayings. The element is practiced on a variety of occasions, ranging from local festivities to nationwide events, where practitioners often use the contest to raise important social issues. Although it was traditionally performed only by men, many women now participate in Aitys and use the contest to express women’s aspirations and viewpoints.

The film is about a traditional Kyrgyz form of folklore—lamentation (koshok). Experts talk about the contents of Kyrgyz lamentation, the situations in which koshok is performed (lamenting the deceased or the bride, when she is sent to the groom’s family) and about how to perform traditional lamentation.

Worshiping Goddesses: Bringing Heaven and Humans
Worshiping the Mother Goddesses of the three realms-heaven, water, and mountains (or forests)-has been a cultural activity since the sixteenth century, significantly influencing the lives of Vietnamese people. In worshiping Mother Goddess Lieu Hanh (the "Mother of the World") and other spirits of legendary heroes, followers practice spirit possession rituals and traditional festivals.\n\nThese cultural expressions combine traditional costumes, music, and dance to help maintain the community's cultural heritage. Through interviews with spirit mediums, this video shows how belief in the Mother Goddesses have united and healed the community.

Water Puppet Theater of Hong Phong
The water puppet theater troupe of Hong Phong formed in Bo Duong Village, about 60 km east of Hanoi. Hong Phong water puppet theater is believed to have begun in the late seventeenth century-the shapes of the puppets used in this art were found carved on the pillars of the village temple. The troupe performs for visitors to the village's traditional festivals, recounting various stories about farmers' lives and the village through puppetry accompanied by music.\n\nThis video demonstrates the connection between the puppet theater and communal worship, in addition to the significance of the performance in Hong Phong Commune.

4. Andong International Mask Dance Festival: Realization of Folkloric Values and Transmission of ICH
Masks and mask dance exist through which they try to realize equality and be free from judgement, allowing you to express yourself as an equal in society regardless of class. The mask dance festival starts on the last Friday of September and lasts for ten days, and over a million people visit domestically and internationally. It has garnered attention from world leaders. Queen Elizabeth II of the UK, George H. Bush and George W. Bush of the USA, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, and other influential leaders have attended. The festival is about mixing modernity with tradition coming together, creating a mosaic of different colors and cultural significance. They use the mask dance festival as a collaborative tool that can bring various cultures together. The mask dance festival also plays a large role in transmitting the heritage to younger generations through various associations that function as a network.

The Art of Doston Narration in Uzbekistan
" Uzbekistan has three regional styles of doston performance: Surkhondarya-Qashqadarya, Khorezm, and Karakalpak. In the Surkhondarya-Qashqadarya style, the doston narrator performs in a guttural voice and accompanied by drum (two-stringed musical instrument). In the Khorezm style, doston songs are performed in a simple voice and accompanied by tor, doira, and bolaman.\n\nThe Karakalpak style of doston is performed in two ways: Romantic dostons are accompanied by karakalpak dutar and ghijjak; heroic epic performances are accompanied qo’biz (very ancient stringed instrument).\n\nThis film includes representatives of all three schools. We learn about their lifestyles, master-apprentice traditions, and processes to prepare certain musical instruments. Recording was conducted in Kashkadarya, Surkhondarya, and Khorezm regions and in the Republic of Karakalpakstan."

Tajikistan Naburz and children's highlight
Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, 2016 Navruz is celebrated in Iranian cultures such as Tajikistan. As it is a happy festive day to welcome the spring after the long winter, the children enjoy various games. This video shows the children at play. Girls wear traditional Tajik costumes, and boys wear formal clothes while playing games like pebꠓble tossing and catching, kite flying, stick tossing, skipping rope, hacky sack, arm wrestling, swinging, breaking eggs. They also sing, allowing viewers to also feel cheerfulness of a festive day and become quite comfortable.\nLabchang, a musical instrument known from ancient times, received its name because it is placed between the lips and is played by a finger. Some old people in a few areas of Tajikistan continue to play labchang, so the art of playing has almost disappeared. The young generation generally doesn’t even now about the instrument. This film is dedicated to the methods of play on various types of labchangs in different parts of Tajikistan.\nVarious dance forms are performed in relation to nature throughout Tajikistan. The dances are varied, mainly having an imitating character. Performed by folk artists, the dances are transferred from generation to generation. Some of the rare dances are gone with their performers. The Pamiri people perform a rare mourning dance that is currently performed only in Bartang Valley and is on the verge of disappearances. Other dance forms are being revived day by day.

Shashmaqom music
Shashmaqam (means the six Maqams (modes)) is a Central Asian musical genre (typical of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) which firstly developed in Bukhara. Shashmaqom (in Farsi - "Six maqoms") is a leading musical-cyclic genre of musical heritage of Uzbek and Tajik people. It includes a cycle of complex and perfect instrumental as well as vocal compositions encompassing different types of melos, forms, usuls (rhythmic formulae) and performances. Shashmaqom is a cycle consisting of six maqoms, namely Buzruk, Rost, Navo, Dugoh, Segoh and Iroq. Each of these consists of two parts respectively, i.e. instrumental one (which is called "Mushkilot") and vocal one (which is called "Nasr"), representing more than 250 cycles of instrumental and vocal compositions in total. Shashmaqom got formed in urban environment, and its bearers of traditions were well-known musicians and singers. Its vocal part was performed in Uzbek and Tajik languages. The texts were mainly taken from the poems of classics of oriental poetry (i.e. Rudaki, Jami, Lutfi, Navoi, Babur, Khafiz, Fizuli, Amiri, Nodira, Zebuniso, Ogahiy and others) and were dedicated to love-related, lyrical, philosophical, didactic, religious themes. Folk poetry examples were also used. Most widely used musical instrument was tanbur. It is based on tuning tanbur that the tonal basis of maqoms emerged. Instrumental part of each maqom included instrumental compositions such as "Tasnif", "Tarje", "Gardun", "Mukhammas" and "Sakil", performed either solo or by instrumental ensemble. However, each part differed with its own tune, character of melody, structure and usuls of doira. Vocal parts are considered the most difficult and complete ones in terms of structure, melos and form and are divided into two cycles (shuba): the first one includes "Sarakhbor", "Talqin", "Nasr" and "Ufar", performed by leading singer - hofiz (their melodies are more developed, of great range and complex form). Between main parts "Tarona" was sung by vocal ensemble as a connecting one (it is a small vocal piece, which has its own tunes, feature and forms). The second cycle (shuba) includes five-part cycles "Moghulcha" and "Savt" (except maqom "Iroq"). In addition to main parts, each maqom incorporates additional compositions: instrumental one (naghma, peshrav, samoyi, hafif), and vocal one (uzzol, ushshoq, bayot, chorgoh, nasrullo, oraz, khusayniy, navrozi sabo, khoro and ajam), the creators of which were bastakors (creators of oral musical tradition). Shashmaqom got formed, has been preserved, mastered and transmitted from generation to generation verbally, based on "Ustoz-shogird" ("master-apprentice") method of learning.
