THE HISTORY OF JAPANESE PICTORIAL STORYTELLING “ETOKI”In Japan, etoki, or picture deciphering, is a centuries-old form of performing arts that involves telling stories about Buddhist principles and historic events while using emaki (illustrated scroll) or kakejiku (hanging picture) as a visual reference. Other related performances are called sekkyou, or sermons, and they are distinguished from etoki in that sekkyou includes narration without any visual references. The stories for both arts, which were originally performed by monks and nuns, may explain the history of a shrine or temple, a pilgrimage, a biography of Shakyamuni, Buddhist sutra, or any other related topics. The origins of this heritage element is unclear, but some evidence indicates that it arrived in Japan from Southeast Asia through China and Korea, and historical records do tell us that monks were performing etoki for aristocratic audiences in Japan by the tenth century.Year2015NationSouth Korea

Nature, Learning, and Tradition in the Indian HimalayaThe parent organization of CEE Himalaya is the Centre for Environment Education (CEE), which was established in August 1984. CEE is a national institution with its headquarters in Ahmedabad and has been given the responsibility by the central government of promoting environmental awareness nationwide. It undertakes demonstration projects in education, communication, and development that endorse attitudes, strategies, and technologies that are environmentally sustainable. Based in the city of Lucknow in the state of Uttar Pradesh, CEE Himalaya has been working in the states of the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) for over two decades. The mission of CEE Himalaya is to enhance understanding of sustainable development in formal, non-formal, and informal education through its work with schools, higher educational institutions, local and Indigenous communities, policy makers and administration, youth, and the general commu-nity. The primary objective of CEE Himalaya is to improve public awareness and understanding of environmental issues with a view to promote the conservation of nature and natural resources by integrating education with traditional streams of knowledge and cultural expressions. Session 2: What Is The Role Of The Community In ICH Safeguarding?Based on the accumulated experience over the course of fifteen years since the adoption of the 2003 Convention, Southeast Asia is well known for its diverse and abundant intangible heritage. Many states in this region have already initiated ICH safeguarding plans with active participation of communities.\nHowever, a number of Member States are still having difficulties employing community‐based safeguarding plan and programs. In implementing the 2003 Convention, much attention should be paid to build capacity to support and safeguard a wider range of ICH Stakeholders, including communities, group, and individuals.\nTherefore, this session will provide an opportunity to share experiences and discuss on the roles the community should exercise in safeguarding ICH. In this session, we will discuss the following questions: (1) Do ICH communities, groups, individuals, and practitioners fully recognise the spirit and significance of the 2003 Convention? Cooperative Measures for Festivals in the Silk Roads RegionBased on the notion of culture as a complex multi-layered phenomenon, we admit that some cultural elements or expressions may fluidly migrate and adapt to different local settings, not necessarily or exclusively serving as a marker of an ethnic identity. Moreover, an emerging concept of shared cultural heritage allows us to disclose positive potential for joining efforts in safeguarding and enlivening the cultural heritage of the people. Connecting various national and local cultures along the Silk Roads aims exactly at gaining the joy of sharing the values, wisdom, creativity; at nurturing mutual interests and empathy among cultures and people; and at searching for common threads across the rich multitude of manifestations of cultural heritage of a vast region. The joint initiative by ICHCAP and IICAS to launch the Silk Roads ICH Networking Program needs support and actions by the wide range of stakeholder organizations and groups. Two options might be considered for a Silk Roads ICH Festivals network—either establish its own training program, capitalizing on the European Festivals Association’s experience or—cooperate with EFA on arranging a special edition of their Festival Academy focused on ICH and open for young managers from within the new network.Year2020NationSouth Korea

Connecting People Through Indigenous Culture in TripuraBru Socio Cultural Organization (BSCO) was established in 1980 with an aim to protect and promote the cultural heritage and tradition of the Reang (Bru x) community in Tripura. BSCO provides opportunities to cultural teams to perform across and outside Tripura. They also organize training for young generations where master artists teach the young ones free of cost. The organization believes that the process of connecting the ethnic communities with ‘mainstream’ can be successful once people start recognizing and giving proper importance to the indigenous culture and BSCO works towards that.Year2017NationIndia

What effects has the 2003 Convention had in the Asia-Pacific region?\n\nChairperson Professor Noriko Aikawa opened the conference by welcoming all of the participants. She explained the topic of the first session and introduced the first two speakers: Dr. Tim Curtis and Professor Amareswar Galla. She then invited the first presenter, Dr. Curtis, to give his presentation. Dr. Curtis’s presentation provided data on where ICHCAP stands and what has been accomplished so far. ICHCAP is getting close to including the entire Asia-Pacific region. Dr. Curtis’s data showed that this region is particularly active, representing almost half of the listings worldwide. Dr. Curtis argued that the unprecedented rapid\nincrease in popularity ICHCAP has experienced means that it has responded to a need. Dr. Curtis’s data showed that ICHCAP has been successful in raising awareness. However, he argued that while awareness is necessary for progress, it is not sufficient.
