Religious and Martial Practice in Chinese Villages: Ritual Aspect of Traditional Chinese Martial ArtsChinese martial arts present a unique combination of bare-handed and armed fighting with calisthenics, breathing exercises, meditation techniques, and elements of traditional Chinese medicine. It was in the late imperial period of Chinese history (the Ming and Qing dynasties, 1368–1912) that folk hand combat became a multifaceted system with features that go beyond the narrow framework of mere fighting. The surviving textual sources attest that during the Ming–Qing transition period, martial arts were perceived by many practitioners as a religious practice. Daoists and Buddhists alike often turned to hand- combat training in striving to achieve various religious goals, be it spiritual enlightenment or immortality. However, as recently discovered textual evidence suggests, it was Chinese local religion that disclosed the most intimate relations to martial arts practice.\nAn inseparable part of Chinese culture, the Chinese hand-combat tradition was (and still is) deeply rooted in rural life, and manifested itself in a particularly vivid way in the religious customs and ritualistic activities of the Chinese village. Chinese local religion, a highly intricate system in its own right, contains an evident martial element. For example, it is strongly believed that the employment of direct physical force against malevolent supernatural powers is not only possible but is sometimes as effective as any other ritual protective means, such as (spells) and (talismans). TRADITIONAL MARITIME SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE OF SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENTS IN INLE LAKEThe Inle Lake is the second largest freshwater shallows in Myanmar, located on the western edge of the Shan Plateau of the eastern part of the country. The estimated surface area is 44.9 square miles and the highest elevation is 2900 feet (880m). Inle Lake is a major tourist destination in Myanmar, attracting tourists by the picturesque beauty of the lake surrounded by mountains, houses standing on poles in the \nlake, beautiful floating gardens, and the cultural practices of the Intha fishermen. The main ethnic people of Inle Lake are Inthan while Pa Oh, Taungyo, Kayan, and Shan people also add to its diversity. \n\nThe people who live in Inle Lake are called Intha (people of lake). They live on the shore and on the lake, making a living by fishing, engaging in handicraft activities, cultivating on floating gardens as well as on \nthe delta of the lake. For transportation, the Intha people use wooden boats; for long trip they use long tail boats with engines, carrying local passengers and goods. Small boats are used for their daily activities.\n\nThe main economy of Inle depends on cultivation and fishing. The unique style of the Intha people is rowing the boat with one leg by standing. They paddle this way because reeds and water plants are many \nin the lake, and if they row sitting down on the boat they could not see reeds and water plants. Making and Worshipping of a HaatdiThe festival of Diwali in India is celebrated by different communities in different ways, performing different rituals. It is a festival of lights celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs, and usually lasts for five days.\nThe Sindhi community in India celebrates Diwali for just three days. One of the distinctive features of their celebration is the worshipping of a haatdi. Haatdi is also worshipped by a few Gujarati communities.\n“Haatdi” comes from the word haat and symbolizes a shop. People worship it mainly to invoke the blessings of Lakshmi (the goddess of abundance and auspiciousness) for work or business, praying for their business to prosper. A haatdi is a colorful representation of a shop. There are some who believe it used to represent the male members of the family who were the breadwinners. The number of haatdis bought was equal to the number of male members in the family, with one being for the female child. Nowadays they are usually bought in pairs of two, four, six. After Diwali, the haatdi is immersed in water.\nThe making of clay haatdi begins on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, which is regarded as auspicious and usually falls in August or September. The people of a particular community in Ahmedabad are involved in the making of haatdis, with the whole family taking part. They even travel out of Gujarat to states like Maharashtra to make and sell their wares. Haatdis are made and sold until Kaali Chaudas (the second day of the five-day festival of Diwali).\nA demonstration of the process of making a haatdi was given by Mr. Chaturbhai, Mr. Varshrambhai, Mr. Bharatbhai, and their families at their place in the lane opposite APS International School in Ahmedabad. MonVat-gine or crescent-shaped gong is one of the Mon traditional musical instruments that has been used since the ancient time. The original crescent-shaped gong was consisted of 14 gongs and used to be played only in Nat (Spirit) propitiation ceremony. But, an additional gong tuned to Nga Pauk (Fifth Note) is added to play since the late 1962. Nepali Paper (Nepali Kagaj)If anyone had an opportunity to go through legal documents in Nepal like legal paper of property rights, they must have noticed the thin, fibrous, off-white paper, which are known as Nepali kagaj or Nepali paper. Not only legal documents but also ancient religious texts were written on that paper.\n\nThe name “Nepali paper” might give the impression that the name comes from being made in Nepal; however, the paper’s actual name is lokta. These papers are handmade from the fibrous inner bark of shrubs named Daphne—Daphne bholua and Daphne papyracea—grown in elevations between 2,500 meters to 4,000 meters.\n\nThe inner fibrous bark is extracted from the plant without harming the root so that the plant can regrow. Thin layers of the bark are stripped out. These thin strips are washed and dried and then boiled for five to eight hours to soften them. After boiling, the strips are transferred to a machine that turns the strips into a puree. (This step used to be done by hand by rubbing seashells on the strips.) Then soft pasty puree is poured evenly into a wooden frame with net. These frames, when dried, produce lokta paper.\n\nThe thickness of paper is controlled with the amount of pulp being poured and spread evenly. Lokta can be made very thick and transparent, which are special characteristics of this paper. These papers strong—not easily torn and resistant to termites and decay. The plants used to make lokta regrows in few years, making it sustainable. Even though machines were introduced for some work, most of the work still done manually.\n\nBecause of its limited use—legal documents and religious manuscripts and to make incense sticks by binding incense powder to the paper and ayurvedic medicinal purpose—these industries were dying out. But the tourism industry gave the rebirth to Nepali paper. Targeting tourists, the producers started to make the various products other than writing paper.\n\nAnother specialty of these papers is that they can be dyed to produce wonderful patterns and even natural elements like leaves and petals can be added to create beautiful designs. Taking advantage of the flexibility, producers started to make various products out of lokta. Nowadays, products such as lampshades, notebooks, paper bags, greeting cards, wrapping paper, photo frames, and calendars are made from the paper. Tourists are the main consumers these products.\n\nAccording to Mr. Raja Ram Tandukar who owns a Nepali paper shop in Kathmandu explains, “lokta products gained popularity with tourist thirty to thirty-five years back. Tourists know this paper as rice paper.” The new life of the Nepali paper industry has created many job opportunities for the people, contributing in the economy.\n\nNow, not only tourists but also the Nepali people started to use this paper in various new forms like for making visiting cards, restaurant menu, paper bags, and photo albums. An Overview of Shamanism in NepalIn Nepal, Shamanism was practiced before the arrival of Hinduism and Buddhism. Now it is integrated within both of these religions. Depending on the credo of a particular ethnic community, shamanistic rituals have no monolithic shape but the core value of shamanism is consistently upheld. Shamans are commonly known as dhami or jhakri though ethnic communities have various terms assigned for them. Traditionally, shamans act as mediators between the spirit world and the human world. They are healers, soothsayers, advisors, and priests. Shamans are common people who work as farmers or in some other day job, and they just happen to practice shamanism, typically in the evening.\n\nAmong many ethnic communities in Nepal, Tamang, a cultural and linguistically distinct community, practices shamanism. They believe spirits in the environment help shamans solve people’s problems. In the Tamangworld, spirits are present as microbes in our environment; this worldview is never written, only maintained by oral culture. Some even say that they learn some mantras in their dreams. It’s also very important to have a master and to learn more mantras from them. In addition to teaching mantras to his disciples, a master also helps shake the body and control trances. The disciple-master relation is important and is seen during rituals.\n\nTamang shaman rituals are impressive to watch as the shaman also renders a captivating dance performance during the ritual. The attire of white dress and feather headgear he wears helps bind the people’s gaze. He uses a garland of 108 rittha seeds and rudrakshya (seed of Elaeocarpus granitreus). They wear bells arranged like a belt, producing sounds when they shake during the rituals. Along with the attire they also require ritual objects like phurba (three headed dragger), tiger bones, and materials like incense, uncooked rice, and seed of oroxylum indicum tree (which is almost like white petals). Beating a drum made of deerskin is one of the most important ritual objects. By beating and shaking his body, the shaman goes into a trance where he communicate with the spirits and finds the cure or answer for the clients’ problems. After every ritual, the shaman tells the people the solution to their problems, which he finds during the rituals. Many people in remote parts of the country still rely on the shaman for cures where they don’t have medical facilities. But in places that have medical facilities some people still go to shamans if doctors cannot cure them.\n\nDuring janai purnima (full moon of August or September), shamans have a special day when they gather at holy sites and perform rituals. It’s also a day to boost power among the other shamans. There was a time when all shamans were men.
