Intangible Cultural Heritages in the AnthropoceneChanges in our planet derived from human activities are now comparable to massive volcanic eruption and meteorite impacts in the past, to the extent that we can now consider the advent of a distinctively new geological era, the Anthropocene. This concept was first proposed by an atmospheric chemist, Paul J. Crutzen, in 2000 and was quickly adopted by earth system scientists and geologists, humanity scholars and social scientists, artists and performers. Yet this new geological concept is still not much familiar to the general public and has to go through many steps to get the official endorsement from the International Commission on Stratigraphy. Trong quan singing (Liêm Thuận commune, Thanh Liêm district, Hà Nam province)Located in the southern part of the Red River Delta, Ha Nam province bears cultural traces of the ancient Viet, where such typical cultural heritages as Trần Thương Temple Festival, Tịch Điền festival (the annual plowing festival), drum making craft of Đọi Tam village, weaving craft of Nha Xá village, martial arts of Liễu Đôi village, etc have been preserved. This land is also famous for a rich and valuable treasure of literature and folk performing arts such as Dậm - Quyển Sơn singing, Lải Lèn singing and especially Trong quan singing that hardly seen in any localities.YearNationViet Nam

Our Story, Our HeritageThe island nation of the Cook Islands comprises fifteen islands centered around Rarotonga in the South Pacific Ocean, and is in free association with New Zealand. Among a population of 8,128 (2022 estimate), over 80% is ethnically Cook Islands (or part) Māori; therefore, English and Cook Islands Māori (Rarotongan) are designated as official languages. Following this brief information about the country, I would like to share the story of heritage recognized through a recent workshop.\nFunding was kindly given by UNESCO through the Tauranga Vananga – Ministry of Cultural Development (MoCD) to implement the safeguarding of ICH in the Cook Islands, focusing on the area of performing arts. This is an opportunity for which we are most grateful to UNESCO, in the knowledge that this is a way of protecting our cultural heritage for our future generations to access and learn from.\nSince 7 February 2022, a total of three ICH capacity-building workshops/trainings have been held for successful applicants as a way of introducing and learning more about the significant role ICH plays in and with the communities.Year2022NationCook Islands

1. Silk Roads Living Heritage Network LaunchThis networking program is based on experiences and achievements obtained from the collaborative work of UNESCO-ICHCAP in the living heritage field in Central Asia over the last decade. \n\nFor reference, the networking program comes on the heels of a three-party MoU signed by ICHCAP and organizations in Uzbekistan in 2019 and was followed by a Central Asia network meeting in Kazakhstan in 2019. In 2020, ICHCAP in cooperation with International Institute for Central Asian Studies (IICAS), conducted a survey project about ICH festivals along the Silk Roads, particularly with countries along the steppe route. When the dust of that spectacle settles down, it is possible to discern what was distinctive and important in a meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee, in the long run and on the ground (everywhere). Punnuk: Unwinding after the Harvest, the Tugging Ritual in the PhilippinesThe punnuk is a tugging ritual of the village folk from three communities in Hungduan, Ifugao in Northern Luzon, Philippines. It is performed at the confluence of Hapao River and a tributary as the final ritual after the rice harvest. Its consummation brings to a close an agricultural cycle and signals the beginning of a new one. \n\nThe punnuk is a ritual of pomp and revelry. Garbed in their predominantly red-col-ored attire of the Tuwali ethno-linguistic subgroup, the participants negotiate the terraced fields in a single file amidst lush greens under the blue skies. The tempo builds up as the participants reach the riverbank, each group positioned opposite the other. GIÓNG FESTIVAL OF PHÙ ĐỔNG AND SÓC TEMPLESIn the historical books and folk beliefs of the Việt, there have been many stories and legends of Thánh Gióng - the Saint of the ancient Việt who was considered as one of the four immortal gods by the Vietnamese nationwide. The monarchic dynasties of the Great Việt in Vietnam bequeathed him as a Heavenly King. Legend has it that he was born as the result of a magical union between a girl from Gióng village and the giant footprint of the rain god in the Việt’s myths. At the age of three, he grew miraculously into a giant after hearing the King’s appeal to find gifted people to save the country and its people.
