Nga-zo: Buddhist Drum Making
Shagzo or the traditional art of woodturning is an ancient art that has been passed down for generations. Shagzo is vibrantly practised in Bhutan and the master artisans are known as Shagzopa. Bhutan’s abundant and wide range of woods like tashing (Juglans regia), hashing (Taxus baccata), baashing (Picea spinulosa), tsenden shing (Cupressus corneyana), sermaling shing (Acer camphellii) and etometo (Rhododendron arboretum) have enabled the Bhutanese Shagzopa to create a variety of exquisite functional and decorative products like turned wooden bowls, cups, plates, and containers of various shapes, sizes and colours unique to Bhutan. Skilled wood turners also craft traditional hand drums that are beaten during religious ceremonies. Since Bhutanese tradition is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Buddha, use of drums and drum sticks are a part of the rituals performed everywhere. Used in all religious ceremonies and rituals, the Bhutanese traditional drum known as Nga, and the Nge-tog (drumstick) are indispensable articles found in every temple, monastery and home. An ancient instrument of musical offering, the beatings of the Nga symbolizes the subjugation of evil, indicates the fluctuation of tunes and wordings, and regulates the pace of other instruments during rituals and propitiation ceremonies.

Hwagakjang (Ox Horn Inlaying)
National Intangible Cultural Heritage, Republic of Korea Hwagak is a transparent plate made of finely ground ox horn. Hwagakjang refers to the handicraft skill of making such a plate or to an artisan with the skill. The materials are scarce and the work requires a great deal of time and a meticulous procedure. This artwork was chiefly used by upper class people. During the Goryeo Period (877 – 1394), cases for keeping Buddhist scriptures and rosaries were made from the skin of the hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). Artisans used a technique of applying colors to the back of an object which permeated to the front, along with mother-of-pearl. This practice continued until the mid-Joseon Period (1392 – 1910). In the ensuing period, handicrafts adorned purely with hwagak developed. Objects made with hwagak skill include wardrobes, chests of drawers, side tables, dressing tables, pencil cases, powder cases, sewing rulers, desks, workbaskets, hand-held fans, and writing brush handles. Hwagak handicraft features elaborate ornamentation in colors and patterns.

Nakjukjang (Bamboo Pyrography)
National Intangible Cultural Heritage, Republic of Korea Nakjukjang refers to bamboo pyrography or artisan with such skill. During the reign of King Sunjo (r. 1800-1834), Park Chang-gyu engaged in the practice, and it was maintained until the colonial period. The practice requires lots of experience and speed. Applications of bamboo pyrography are arrow shafts, acupuncture needle cases, sword handles, folding screens, tobacco pipes, handheld folding fans (particularly thick bamboo pieces forming the first and last sticks), pencil cases, etc. Shapes of butterflies are often used in handheld folding fans, with shapes of bats sometimes used as well. The demand for objects containing bamboo pyrography has decreased noticeably. The skill has been designated as important intangible cultural heritage for protection.

“The Swan Rings: A Story of Eternal Love” is a captivating journey into Mongolia’s rich oral heritage, retelling the 500-year-old love story of Donoi the Rich and Tsagaankhuvi—a tale passed down through generations and revived today through storytelling, singing, and sand art.\n\nSet in the breathtaking landscapes of present-day Aldarkhaan soum in Zavkhan province, this story of devotion and harmony pays tribute to two legendary figures who helped sustain their community through horse herding and deep compassion. Honored and remembered as Ongods—ancestral spirits—Donoi and Tsagaankhuvi's story is a cherished legacy that continues to inspire.\n\nThis video reintroduces Mongolia’s storytelling traditions, blending folktale narration with epic singing and visual storytelling through sand drawing. At its heart are three handcrafted portraits depicting the main characters in their original attire, and a symbolic pair of silver swan rings—representing eternal love and unity.\n\nTo bring this tale to life, the creators conducted extensive research—consulting Ongods, visiting sacred sites, and collaborating with master storytellers such as N. Lantuu, B. Bayarmagnai, and G. Buuveibaatar. The team also drew inspiration from the natural beauty of Ganga Lake’s swan gatherings and the horse festivals of Agtana Khureet.\n\nNarrated by Merited Artist S. Otgon and sung by tradition bearer S. Dansran, this multimedia work features sand art by B. Sodnomdarjaa, original music by B. Erdenebat, and performances by S. Dansran and E. Enkhjin. The project was conceptualized by Agula Ulaach, revised by Agaruu UdGun, technically edited by B. Bilguun, and beautifully translated by B. Centuries ago, there the ger, also known as a yurt, appeared. It still offers shelter to nomads in particular places in Central Asia.
