Prayer to Yellama
The chaudike is a string instrument. Chaudike songs are most popular in the northern part of Karnataka, especially near Dharwad, where goddess Yellamma is worshipped by millions of people. The songs are built around the story of Jamadagni and his wife Renuka. In Saundatti (Dharwad, Karnataka), Renuka is known as Yellamma. The rise of Renuka as a mother goddess was perhaps the result of a complex merging of numerous personalities and myths. Renuka is most popular among the lower castes, such as the Pariahs, who are the performers in this recording. The community of Devadasis performs rituals that include Chaudike songs at Renuka shrines. These songs tell the story of Jamadagni, Renuka, and their son Parashurama.

Pwoan (Traditional Log Pulling Chant)
This chant is from Ifaluk Island and is sung when pulling heavy objects like logs. The chant portrays how men from the island went fishing and caught lots of fish for the whole island. It also talks about the knowledge passed on from the elders. The chant is sung by kids when they play on the beach in the evening. Some of these chants were composed for newborn babies to put them to sleep. They are called Arhiuwerhu Wen Fan Luneoyiun.

Uluiqalau delana cere dina(Majestic Peak of Uluiqalau Mountain)
The song describes the experience of climbing a mountain called Uluiqalau, located on the island of Taveuni. The island is the third largest island in Fiji and is also referred to as the Garden Island. The tune portrays the cold air that descends from its peak to the forest below and down to the island shores. The song is performed by a group from Nakuku village around Vaturova River in Cakaudrove province.

Girls and boys perform lapar songs composed of four-lined ghazals in two groups. Through lapar songs, girls and boys express their love to each other, make decisions, and take oaths. They sing their heart’s grief with a certain melody but without any music. If both the girl and the boy who are singing lapar fall in love with each other, they present gifts to one another. If the boys present flowers to girls, the girls present a kerchief, belt-kerchief, handkerchief, perfume, or some other gift.

The lullaby is sung by a Bandari woman in Karnataka to a female child affectionately addressed as Sundar Taruni, meaning “beautiful girl.” She sings, “Beautiful young girl. Jo jo. Go to sleep.”
