Yugijang (Brassware Making)
National Intangible Cultural Heritage, Republic of Korea Yugijang refers to a brassware making skill, or to an artisan with such a skill. On the Korean Peninsula, brassware was first made during the Bronze Age. During the Silla Period (57 BC – AD 935), there was a government agency in charge of production of brassware. The skill continued to develop, and thin brassware with beautiful luster came to be made during the Goryeo Period (877 – 1394). Then, there was a lull in development, but brassware enjoyed popularity again by the 18th Century. Anseong, Gyeonggi-do was known for the production of good-quality brassware items, and noble class people placed orders for custom-made brassware goods with producers there. Brass may be any one of a broad range of copper alloys, usually with zinc as the main additive. Brassware displays a yellowish color with subdued luster. Cupronickel ware displays a white color. There are three types of yugi (brassware), depending on the production technique used. To make bangjja yugi, ingots are first made with melted brass and then people strike them with hammers. Examples of articles made with this method are jing (large gong), kkwaenggwari (small gong), food bowls and wash basins. Jumul yugi (forged brassware) is made by using molds. The term Anseong Machum was coined to refer to an object or item that was custom-made for a particular situation, as brassware made in Anseong satisfied specific needs of customers. Semi bangjja yugi refers to brassware made using both bangjja and forging methods. Yugijang is the country’s leading traditional metal artifact-making skill with wide practical applications.

Indonesian Kris
The kris or keris is a distinctive, asymmetrical dagger from Indonesia. Both weapon and spiritual object, the kris is considered to possess magical powers. The earliest known kris go back to the tenth century and most probably spread from the island of Java throughout South-East Asia. Kris blades are usually narrow with a wide, asymmetrical base. The e 40 variants), the pamor (the pattern of metal alloy decoration on the blade, with approximately 120 variants), and tangguh referring to the age and origin of a kris. A bladesmith, or empu, makes the blade in layers of different iron ores and meteorite nickel. In high quality kris blades, the metal is folded dozens or hundreds of times and handled with the utmost precision. Empus are highly respected craftsmen with additional knowledge in literature, history and occult sciences. Kris were worn everyday and at special ceremonies, and heirloom blades are handed down through successive generations. Both men and women wear them. A rich spirituality and mythology developed around this dagger. Kris are used for display, as talismans with magical powers, weapons, sanctified heirlooms, auxiliary equipment for court soldiers, accessories for ceremonial dress, an indicator of social status, a symbol of heroism, etc.

Duseokjang (Metal Craft)
National Intangible Cultural Heritage, Republic of Korea Duseokjang refers to the skill of making metal accessories, including hinges, used in wood furniture or buildings, or to an artisan with such a skill. Nickel silver is used to make more luxurious metal accessories. Brass accessories are used for drawer chests, chests, wardrobes, windows, etc. Patterns used are: “亞” shaped letters and the shapes of butterfly, bat, fish, and crane. Brass accessories were specially made to the order of a chief carpenter.

Baekdong Yeonjukjang (Nickel-Copper Pipe Making)
National Intangible Cultural Heritage, Republic of Korea Yeonjukjang refers to the skill of making a long smoking pipe, or to an artisan with such a skill. It is said that yeonjuk (a long smoking pipe) was first made after the Japanese Invasion of Korea (1592 – 1598), when tobacco was introduced to Korea through Japan. Dongnae, Busan, which used to be the country’s center for trade with Japan, was a leading place for production of yeonjuk. Yeonjuk consists of the mouthpiece, the bowl, and the long, thin stem. The bowl that contains the tobacco has to withstand heat. It is made of copper, tin, nickel-copper or very rarely, china. The mouthpiece is made of jade, ivory or ox horn. When making the nickel-copper used in the production of a smoking pipe, an alloy of copper (58%), nickel (37%) and zinc (5%) is made. If the nickel content is high, it appears to be white. The alloy is beaten to make a very thin piece, and the parts are soldered. The work requires an exquisite level of workmanship. Pipes with blue embellishments made in Dongnae and those made in Gyeongju, Gimcheon, Yeonghae, Ulsan, and Yecheon are famous. The workmanship is still handed down in Namwon, Jeollabuk-do and Anseong, Gyeonggi-do.

2010 Field Survey Report: Intangible Cultural Heritage Safeguarding Efforts in Indonesia
Based on the ICHCAP Field Survey on Intangible Cultural Heritage Safeguarding Efforts in some South-East Asian countries (2009-2012), this summary provides a brief overview on the ICH situation in Cambodia, Thailand, Viet Nam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Laos, and Myanmar . The summary focuses mainly on ICH safeguarding systems, safeguarding policies, and ICH inventories as well as on pending issues and the urgent safeguarding needs of these countries. Moreover, information on the main entities in charge of ICH safeguarding and opinions of each country on the issue of community involvement are provided. To give a quick overview these countries’ participation in ICH safeguarding at the international level, some additional information related to UNESCO is specified as well. Apart from the main topic, information on the situation of intellectual property related to ICH safeguarding in each country is included. This survey report offers a large sample of the diverse ICH situations in South-East Asian countries. Each country has a different background on the issue of intangible heritage. For instance, Indonesia is the only country participating in the field survey that has a programme in the Register of Best Practices. Viet Nam developed ICH-related definitions in its Law on Cultural Heritage; whereas the Philippines has a strong legislative background and solid network of public structures protecting cultural heritage. Cambodia recognises the link between cultural heritage and development of national economy and runs relevant activities on promoting traditional culture while maximizing its economic benefits to the country. For Laos, training local artists rather than researchers in ICH safeguarding, including IPR, is deemed to be essential, as the artists are the important resources that master their arts. Among the South-East Asian participants, Thailand and Myanmar are the newest to approach ICH safeguarding. Although all countries are concerned about the threats ICH faces, most countries participating in the survey haven’t defined ICH and haven’t established national ICH lists. Meanwhile, drawing up an inventory of traditional cultural expressions in different forms—register, cultural map, or database—is a common activity in these countries. Moreover, each country expresses a high degree of motivation and encouragement for safeguarding ICH, sharing experiences, and promoting international cooperation.\n\n- Accepted the ICH Convention in 2007; conducted survey in 2010.\n- As of March 2018, has 6 ICH elements on the RL, 2 elements on the USL, 1 element as GSP and 3 accredited NGOs.

2013-14 Field Survey Report: Intangible Cultural Heritage Safeguarding Efforts in Korea
East Asian region is developed a rich of variety in the intangible heritage manifests, from oral traditions, performing arts, customs, and rituals to festivals, clothing, crafts, and food throughout the centuries. However, as with other counties in the Asia-Pacific region, which is a treasure house of ICH, traditional cultural heritage of East Asia was in a crisis of extinction due to shifts in industrial structures and the population outflow of younger generations to urban areas. In response, the Republic of Korea and Japan introduced the concept of intangible cultural heritage in policies related to safeguarding cultural heritage more than fifty years ago. Mongolia, with the support of its respective government, followed suit by establishing an institutional foundation for national ICH inventory making and ICH safeguarding after ratifying the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003). Moreover, in relation to ICH safeguarding activities, UNESCO Category 2 Centres, which support ICH safeguarding activities, have been simulataneously going through the establishment process in the Republic of Korea, China, and Japan. As a well-intentioned objective for the future activities, the three centres are making efforts to build a cooperative mechanism among themselves. Another effort made in the region is the establishment of the ICH safeguarding system in Mongolia. The government of Mongolia has drawn up a national ICH inventory and identified bearers as well. The countries in East Asia have been very active in safeguarding, and their participation at regional and international levels. Therefore, countries in the region need to build trust and collaborative relationships while safeguarding ICH at national, regional, and international levels.\n\n- Accepted the ICH Convention in 2005; conducted survey in 2013.\n- As of December 2014, has twenty-two ICH elements on the RL and eight accredited NGO.
