Trương Định was revered by the people as “the hero who defeated the French invaders”, who led the army and people of the South to rise up against the French colonialists. After his death, to commemorate his merits, the people built temples, monuments and held festival in Gò Công town and Gia Thuận communal house, Gò Công Đông district on the day of his death, August 20th of the lunar calendar.
On the festival, many people in the province and tourists from all over the country came to attend the ritual. The main activities of the festival were offering incense at Truong Dinh temple, the procession and flower offering were solemnly and respectfully performed by representatives of the Gò Công district Party Committee.
In the hearts of the people of Gò Công, Trương Định was not only a national hero but also a tutelary god who had the merit of opening up new fields and establishing villages and always blessed this land with prosperity and peace. Therefore, for the people of Gò Công, Tiền Giang, the festival of Trương Định is the biggest festival of the year. |
