| Description | 태국 음력으로 12월(양력 11월) 보름날 밤에는 러이끄라통(Loy Krathong) 축제가 펼쳐진다. 수코타이(Sukhothai) 시대에 시작돼 오늘날까지도 큰 인기를 얻고 있는 러이끄라통 축제는 물의 여신을 기리며 지난해의 불운과 불행을 씻어내고 새해의 행운을 비는 지역 축제다. 끄라통(Krathong)은 바나나 나무의 몸통과 잎으로 만든 연꽃 모양의 바구니를 뜻한다. 태국 사람들은 이 바구니를 강이나 운하에 띄움(Loy)으로써 모든 역경과 불운이 사라질 것이라고 믿는다. 축제날이 되면 가족별로 바구니를 최대한 아름답게 만들어 각양각색의 꽃, 초, 향 등으로 장식한다. 또한 머리카락, 손톱, 옷 조각, 돈 등을 바구니에 넣는다. 이와 같은 물건을 바구니에 넣어 띄움으로써 과거의 불운을 없앨 수 있다고 믿는 것이다. 물에 띄우기 전에 초와 향을 켜고 소원을 빌거나 물의 여신에게 잘못한 일(오염 등)에 대해 용서를 빌며 불운을 가져가 주길 기도한다. 이 축제는 태국 전역에서 볼 수 있지만 지역마다 독특한 특징이 있다. 그러나 대부분이 어두워진 후에 시작된다는 공통점이 있다. 축제에서는 다음과 같은 행사가 진행된다. 최고의 끄라통 대회 : 가장 아름답고 창의적인 끄라통 뽑기 미스 노파마스(Noppamas) 선발 대회 : 노파마스는 수코타이 시대 르타이(Lethai) 왕의 아름다운 왕세손비의 이름으로, 가장 아름답고 똑똑한 여성을 찾는 대회 전통문화 쇼 및 공연 불꽃놀이 전통의상 입기 과거에 일부 사람들은 무게가 가볍고 아름다우며 물 위에서 균형잡기 편한 스티로폼 및 인공 장식물을 사용했다. 그러나 지구온난화 문제가 심각해지면서 전통문화 행사에서도 그 심각성을 인식하게 됐다. 이제는 환경친화적인 재료, 즉 아이스크림 콘이나 빵을 전통 끄라통이나 다른 아름다운 모양으로 구워 물고기가 먹을 수 있도록 하는 경우가 많다. 그러나 아직까지는 바나나 나무 몸통과 잎이 가장 전통적이며 보편적인 재료라 할 수 있다. 사진 : Loy krathong ⓒ Department of Cultural Promotion | ||
