Description North Korea has been very active in its national efforts for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) since its joining of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2008. The cultural heritage policy direction of the country expanded its focus from tangible heritage, which includes relics and remains, to include ICH. In 2012, the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act was established to lay a legal foundation for ICH policy. In 2015, the National Heritage Preservation Act was established, which was amended in 2019, offering an institutional framework for policy implementation regarding ICH as ‘immaterial heritage’. In April 2019, Article 41 of the Socialist Constitution was modified to remove the wording ‘revivalism’from the text, among other modifications, to further clarify the direction for ICH safeguarding policy.
