Given that individual creativity is a core component of creative industries, what exactly is the source of such creativity? Creating new combinations from existing concepts is incredibly important. When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone 4, he declared that Apple was not just a company that develops technology, but one that combines the humanities and technology. The design of the iPhone is said to have been inspired by designer Dieter Rams (1932–) and the Bauhaus school (active in Germany from 1919 to 1933, teaching a comprehensive curriculum in arts and crafts), arguably the birthplace of modern design. In essence, Jobs combined the spirit of Bauhaus, which envisioned “a future where everyone in the world lives happier regardless of their circumstances,” and good design intended for all, and the philosophy of Rams, who sought a universal, idealized, “less, but better” design that would not be out of place anywhere. |
