Moryonan: A Lenten Tradition in Marinduque Island
Description "The pagbabali ng sibat ni Longhino, a curious part of the moryonan ritual of Mogpog, happens at the San Isidro Labrador Parish Church in total darkness. Longinus's spear, the one he stabbed Jesus with, will be broken in three pieces inside the church. Longinus will run out of the church shouting that Christ has risen. When the spear is broken, an agawan ensues, with people scrambling for a piece of the spear, now considered a talisman or agimat. This is done in total darkness during the Easter Vigil Mass. The Tagalog people of Marinduque Island, Philippines, practices the moryonan or pagmomoryon, a penitential ritual during Holy Week. The practice is distinctive for the wearing of heavy masks. The town of Mogpog is said to be the origin of the practice and it is where one finds its most traditional form. "
